Perth Weekend Trips: Off-Road Camping in D’Entrecasteaux National Park
The weekend is right around the corner, and it’s almost time to hit the open road! So how can you make the most of a WA off-road getaway?
D’Entrecasteaux National Park is the perfect holiday spot, offering sweeping landscapes and views of the coast 315 kilometres south of Perth. So, pack your bags, pile into the camper, and get ready for an unmissable journey.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Where to Go in D’Entrecasteaux National Park
Named after the French navigator who found this stunning spot in 1792, D’Entrecasteaux is all about scenery. The park overlooks an incredible coastline, with plenty of viewing platforms where you can stop to take in the sights – including migrating whales from September to June.
D’Entrecasteaux offers two-wheel drive access to rugged cliffs and coast, along with a variety of walking trails and beaches. The national park is home to beautiful Karri forests and some of the country’s most unique native wildlife. Plus, you can learn about the earliest Indigenous Australians who called this place home.
Want to get off road? Drive the Summertime or Sandy Peak four-wheel drive tracks. Alternatively, take a trip from the Yeagarup Dunes to Warren Beach, or drive the camper from the Gardner River via the scenic Windy Harbour. There are so many options!
Remember to keep a close eye on the road, as things can get a little rocky out here.
Things to Be Aware of As You Drive
It’s also important to be aware of conservation areas. D’Entrecasteaux National Park is home to various natural flora and fauna.
Stay on the track and avoid disturbing local plants or animals. This will also help to reduce the effects of dieback camp in established areas and take all your waste with you when you leave. When it comes to lighting fires, make sure that these stay within provided fire rings only, and avoid lighting during bushfire season.
This area is also linked to extensive Aboriginal culture and heritage. As you travel, be respectful of the land, and stick to designated tracks to avoid damaging cultural and spiritual artefacts.
In D’Entrecasteaux National Park, fees do apply. Explore the latest fee information on the Explore Parks WA website.
Pack Up the Camper
Check your caravan tyre pressure, and get yourself ready for the ultimate journey.
When driving off-road at D’Entrecasteaux, you’ll need to ensure you have access to plenty of food and water, as well as a decent first-aid kit. Remember to pack a satellite phone if you’ll be travelling to out-of-service areas and let someone know where you’re going.
