Thinking of buying a caravan but wondering if it’s really worth it in Perth? The time is now!

The latest changes to West Australian law are making it easier than ever for Perth-based caravan adventurers to enjoy everything sunny WA has to offer – all from the comfort of your off-road camper. With these updates, you’ll be free to camp where you want to, with only minimal applications and approval processes to stand in your way.

What do these legal changes really mean for you? Let’s find out.

Changes to the Law

As of September 2024, the WA Government is expanding local government approval powers as part of the WA Caravan Parks and Camping Regulations.

A restructured application process is set to make it quicker and easier for travellers to access approval to camp on private land, with local governments finally getting to have their say.

Previously, camping approvals in excess of three months required an application to the Minister for Local Government. Now local governments will themselves be able to exercise control and approve campers within their own jurisdictions.

What Does This Mean for Your Next Adventure?

What does this really mean for you? No more missing out on the freedom of adventure so often enjoyed by east coasters! Great camping is coming to the west.

The latest law changes will allow Perth caravan enthusiasts to hit the road with ease with no limit to where you can travel and much less restrictions over where you can stay.

No approval will be required for campers setting up house on private property for five days or less. For longer stays, travellers can seek local government approval, up to 24 months, without needing to involve state bodies and navigate lengthier, trickier application processes.

Better yet, upon expiry of a camping approval, applicants will be free to re-apply, provided they continue to meet all relevant conditions of approval.

Any downsides? Not if you do the right thing. However, the fine for unauthorised campers will double from $100 to $200, making it more important to stick by the rules.

Find out more about the rules and your obligations by reviewing the WA Government’s factsheet for temporary accommodation and camping outside of caravan parks.
